Directed by Emmy Award Winning Nick Nanton, this powerful film pulls back the curtain on the hidden crisis of trafficking and child exploitation happening, right here in the United States. Through exclusive access to investigators, survivor advocates, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force members, and experts in the field, Hiding in Plain Sight exposes how traffickers operate in communities across the country, and how ordinary people are stepping up to stop it.

Created in partnership with law enforcement and with national child protection experts and advocates, this film reflects Our Rescue’s commitment to U.S.-based efforts and our role as a convener in the fight to protect children.

    Derek serves as the CEO of Our Rescue, bringing over 30 years of experience in federal law enforcement, including a distinguished career with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).    

    While at HSI, Derek led an organization of more than 10,000 law enforcement personnel and spearheaded the creation of the DHS Center for Countering Human Trafficking, the first unified, inter-component coordination center for countering human trafficking. Derek also served as Managing Director, Federal Law Enforcement and Commercial at Thomson Reuters Special Service, LLC.  Derek is a member of the International Security Management Association and serves on the Law Enforcement Advisory Board for the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Sciences from George Mason University.

    With over 25 years of experience in law enforcement, including digital forensics and cybercrime investigation assistance in support of the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, United States Secret Service and The Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, John serves as head of mission for Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He is leading the expansion of the Asia Mission Operations program, which includes law enforcement relationships and support for survivor care.  Previously, John served as Director of Digital Forensics Services at SEARCH Group, Inc. and worked at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon as Deputy Sheriff, Cybercrimes Detective and Digital Forensics Laboratory Manager. John also operated his own consultancy Carpe Veritas Digital Forensics, LLC.

    In her role as Strategic Advisor for the Washington State Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Kelly brings over 20 years of experience in community education to counsel over 150 law enforcement agencies on strategies that both prevent and effectively respond to technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation. Through her commitment and expertise, she is an essential figure in protecting children from trafficking and other online dangers.

    Allison M. Smith has had an extensive career in advocacy for children and families. She has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Human Development and Social Policy from the University of Utah, where she taught for many years. In addition to her teaching, she developed a Life Coaching practice and became the Statewide Coordinator for the Office of Drug Endangered Children for the Nevada Attorney General. Through the course of her work in Nevada, she saw many drug endangered children who became victims of human trafficking. She was then the Education and Outreach Specialist for the Trafficking in Person’s Program at the Asian Association of Utah where she conducts training to educate all organizations, agencies and communities throughout Utah regarding human trafficking and best practices in supporting survivors of human trafficking.

    Lindy Borchardt

    Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County, Texas
    Lindy has over 30 years of experience as a criminal prosecutor and trial and appellate lawyer for victims of sexual abuse. Using a trauma-informed approach, Lindy prosecuted human traffickers as an assistant criminal district attorney for Tarrant County and established the first human trafficking prosecution unit in her office. She received the 2022 Community Impact Award from the Tarrant County 5 Stones Taskforce and the 2023 Three Key Award from Unbound Now. Serving as the Legislative Liaison for the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office during the 87th and 88th Texas Legislative sessions, Lindy worked closely with State legislators to draft and promote sound criminal justice laws. She continues her work in the 89th Legislative session and was invited to provide subject matter expert testimony before the Senate Criminal Justice Committee.
